Hurricane preparedness

1.  Remove all possible flying projectiles! If hurricane winds can knock over huge trees, imagine what it could do to your pots! Most damage comes from things picked up and flying through windows, etc. Glass will hold as long as it's not broken.

2.  If you get a busted window, you got trouble!

3.  Don't count on your electronics working, phone towers most likely will go down. Get out the old desk phones that you plug in.

4.  If you have a gas stove, make sure you have enough gas. Most likely the electricity will go out for at least a week. Be prepared!

5.  Beware of fumes from gas grills, can kill you! Do that outside! Also kerosene lamps create those fumes as well. If you feel drowsy, that's most likely the fumes.

6.  Fill up the bath tub, buckets with water. Make sure you have bleach, good to put some in the toilet if the water gets shut off.

7.  If the water gets shut off, not only do you need drinking water, but you'll need water to flush the toilets and bathing. I've used bay water to flush the toilets.

8.  If you have a shed in the yard, good idea to tie it down. You can use rope or straps connected to trailer tie downs.

9.  Stock up on non refrigerated food items, remember prescriptions, etc.

10.  If you have a gas stove, great, if not, good idea to find some thing you can use to heat water without power.

11.  Fill up containers with fresh water and store in the freezer.  Remember to leave space for expansion.

Also, remember that water after a storm is sometimes contaminated.  You may have to boil it.  You can also heat water for bathing.

11. Make sure your vehicle is full of gas!
